The Importance of Regular Grooming for Your Dog or Your Cat

Did you know that grooming your dog – or your cat, is about much more than making them look nice or keeping them clean? Grooming your pet is really about their overall health and well-being. A regular grooming helps make them feel better and even provides more vitally and enhanced emotional health.

While your pet is groomed, this is also an opportunity to examine their entire body for irregularities that can help spot problems before they turn into an issue that could be life threatening. Grooming can help detect ticks or fleas, lumps, and skin irritations and also check their eyes, ears and their teeth to make sure they appear healthy.

Grooming can include nail trimming, bathing, hairstyling, brushing, removing difficult knots or matting and dips for fleas and ticks if needed.

How often should your dog or cat be groomed?

The frequency of grooming really depends on the length of the animal’s coat, whether you have a dog or a cat. For pets with very long coats, grooming may be needed every 4 weeks; however, a grooming every six weeks is typically what is required for most dogs and cats.

Cats with very long hair, such as Persians, and dogs like Collies, Maltese and Afghan Hounds, could benefit from a weekly visit.

It’s important to help make grooming an enjoyable part of your pet’s life by starting them on regular visits as young as possible to avoid anxiety later in life.
